In 1934 automobile engineer Ferdinand Porsche was commissioned by the German government to produce a 'people's car.' This came to fruition with the opening of the 'KdF-Wagen' factory in 1938. 'KdF' stood for 'Kraft durch Freude' or' Strength through Joy'. The little car it produced became the now famous Beetle and Volkswagen began its headlong rush to become one of the world's largest automobile builders of the 21st century owning Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Seat, Skoda and Porsche.
