Herbert Austin designed the first Wolseley cars until he fell out with the board and started his own ‘Austin Motor Company’ in  Longbridge Birmingham in 1906. By 1917 it was Britain’s largest motor factory and Austin was knighted for his services to the motor industry. In 1922 Austin introduced one of the best loved cars of all time…. the Seven, it was even built under licence by BMW under the name ‘Dixi’. Although Lord Austin died in 1941 his company lived on through the Nuffield Group, BMC, British Motor Holdings, BL and finally with the Austin Rover Group before the curtain finally came down on the Austin name in 1987… the Seven, the Mini and the Metro will long be remembered.
