Cars were first manufactured at the Vauxhall Iron Works, London in 1903… hence the company’s name. By 1905 it had outgrown its surroundings and moved out to Luton in Bedfordshire where it prospered further with the American giant General Motors taking control in 1925. GM really wanted Austin but the move would have been too controversial and they settled for the smaller Vauxhall company. The move brought a transatlantic feel to all Vauxhall’s future designs with their cars generally bigger, brasher and more technically advanced than the average British models. Many of the late 20th century cars were Vauxhall badged Opels and today GM builds ‘world cars’ that Vauxhall is very much a part of.
