BMW’s origins lie in the early days of aviation when in 1916 Karl Rapp and Gustav Otto started to make aero engines in their small Bavarian factory.  This pioneering heritage that started out in flying can be seen to this day in Bayerische Motoren Werke’s blue and white logo that adorns every car and symbolises a spinning propeller blade.
