The giant North American Chrysler Corporation was originally founded by Walter Chrysler when he produced his first cars in 1924. In 1928 he bought out Dodge and went on to become the third of the ‘Big 3’ US autobuilders. Wanting to become a global brand Chrysler first entered Europe in 1967 when it purchased the Rootes Group in the UK and Simca in France. It retired the Hillman, Humber & Sunbeam names producing the Chrysler 180, Alpine & Horizon. In 1978 however it sold out to Peugeot for just a $1.00. In 1987 it acquired the prestigeous Jeep brand when it bought American Motors for $2 billion. It has since regrouped in Europe and with Fiat taking a 20% stake in 2009 it is now closely linked in with the Lancia brand. Over the years Fiat has slowly increased its holding until it now owns the majority of Chrysler shares.
