It was in 1907 that William Hillman started by building himself a factory in his rather large garden at his home in Coventry and asking William Coatalen to design a car for him. The concern was bought by the Rootes brothers in the late 1920’s but it was not until the launching of the Minx model in 1932 that finally set Hillman on the road to becoming one of Britain’s most popular makes. Successive models of Minx served the company well but it was the Imp of 1963 that caught the customers eye and sold for over a decade. Bought out by Chrysler in 1976 all surviving Hillman models adopted this new company name and Hillman quietly disappeared into history.
