William Morris opened his factory in Cowley Oxford in 1910, producing his first car in 1913. His much loved ‘Bullnose’ Cowley of 1915-26 became Britain’s answer to the Ford Model T. The 1948 Issigonis designed Minor turned into a million seller as it grew into the Morris 1000 of the 60’s. The last great Morris was possibly its best….the Mini, which rewrote the rulebook for small cars. When Austin-Rover produced its replacement, the Metro, it was produced as an Austin only and this was the final nail in the Morris coffin with the company dying from neglect in 1985. A real shame it didn’t reach its centenary in 2013.
