Founded in 1911 by Masujiro Hashimoto, the Kwalshinsha Motor Car Works produced it’s first car in 1914 and called it the DAT. 1931 saw the DAT replaced by the Datson (son of DAT), and when Nissan took control in 1933 it led in turn to the company name being changed to Datsun. Although Nissan themselves made cars in their own right and used their name in their home  market the Datsun name continued to be used throughout the world until 1983 when the Nissan branding was introduced globally, the Datsun name being finally dropped in 1985. Interestingly Nissan produced Japanese built Austins throughout the 1950’s and used the old Austin A & B series engines to further develop their own modern engine designs. Since 1999 when Nissan faced severe financial difficulties they have been in partnership with Renault.
