L ike many of the pioneering car-makers Armand Peugeot started out as a bicycle maker with his first try at the new technology being a Daimler powered quadricycle. Soon his petrol driven Peugeots were being offered for sale to the public and in 1895 a Peugeot was the first ever car to race on Michelin pneumatic tyres. Peugeot flew the flag successfully for France at many of the early 20th century Grand Prix events but gradually moved away towards the manufacturing of sporting family cars. In 1974 it acquired Citroen and in 1978 it swallowed up Chrysler’s European operations. Since then Peugeot has quietly been building some of the finest family cars in Europe with the 205GTi of 1984 possibly its best effort yet. The Lion symbol stems from the early years when the company was called Lion-Peugeot.
