Saab Motors was formed in 1945 when Svenska Aeroplan AB (SAAB)  a Swedish aerospace and defence company started a project to build a small automobile. This appeared in 1949 as the Saab 92 but it was their 96 model of 1960 that saw Saab start to export its products across the world. The 96 became a classic design and sold for 20 years. In 1969 Saab merge with Scania trucks and in 1989 General Motors  took a 50% stake which it increased to 100% in 2000. Despite its many loyal followers in 2010 Saab revealed it was in a dreadful financial state and two years later it sadly went into receivership.
