Sunbeam…. yet another bicycle maker, but this time from Wolverhampton, started making cars in 1899. Based very much around Grand Prix racing the company’s success reached new heights in the 1920’s with Henry Segrave taking the world land speed record twice in a V12 Sunbeam reaching 203.70mph at Daytona beach Florida. The Depression killed off Sunbeam and it fell into the hands of the Roote Brothers in 1935 who turned the name into an up-market Hillman. Its sporting pretentions re-emerged in the 1960’s with the Rapier, Stiletto, Alpine and Tiger, but it couldn’t last and in 1976 Chrysler finally ended the name.
