Although established in 1915 as a subsidiary of the SFK ball bearing manufacturer in Sweden, its first car, the OV 4 ‘Jakob’, didn’t roll off the production line in Gothenberg until 1927.  The name Volvo was chosen as it is the Latin for ‘I roll’ in reference to its ball bearing connection. It was Assar Gabrielsson, the sales manager and Gustav Larson, an engineer, who decided to build a car that could withstand Sweden’s rough country roads and extreme Winter temperatures. Trucks and buses followed over the years and in 1999 Volvo was sold to the Ford Motor Company for $6.45 billion. The sale didn’t work out and Ford sold the company on to Geely Automotive of China in 2010 for only $1.8 billion.
